St John's United Reformed Church Sports Club

Westbury Road, Ipswich, IP4 4RH

St John's United Reformed Church Sports Club (originally St John's Congregational Church Sports Club) was founded in 1934 at the suggestion of the then Minister, Revd H J S Guntrip, on a piece of land purchased on the west side of Westbury Road, Ipswich.  The club has occupied the same site ever since.

There are two sections to the Club - Bowls and Tennis

Bowls Club

St John's URC Bowls Club is a small, friendly and thriving Bowls Club, with some 40 members.  Membership can be either social or full – the latter play in League games.  We have a compact green, which is maintained to a high standard and challenges all players!

Our outdoor season begins in late April and extends through to the middle of September.

Full Club Members are registered with the County Association.  The Club plays in three local evening Leagues, which are at three different levels of competition - our successes here are varied, but the games are always enjoyable. Our Samford team were promoted in 2010 to a higher division.

We play ‘Friendlies’ against other Clubs most Tuesday afternoons - these are highly popular, ideal events for newcomers to the sport and for the social members.  A number of internal tournaments and competitions are also organised across the season - these are open to all members.

We welcome new members be they experienced, or absolute beginners.  For information about the Club, please feel free to contact our Secretary, Richard Hammond on (01473) 712506, or email bowls@stjohnsurcips.org

Tennis

The club is open to both social and match players, with weekly social sessions and a number of teams in local leagues catering for a wide range of standards.  Coaching for juniors is available all year round, with mid-week evening sessions with our head coach during term time for both members and non-members (members get a discount).

Facilities include 3 macadam courts, two floodlit; catering arrangements; changing rooms; meeting room; toilets.

Membership information

We offer individual, junior/student and family memberships.  You are invited to pick up a welcome leaflet from the club or contact one of the committee members to join.  As part of the joining process, we require that you have a short hit with an existing member to assess your level for social/match play.  Juniors are welcome to attend Saturday morning sessions during the summer to try it out before they are required to join.
